Frequently
Asked Questions
Really,
are electric scooters practical transportation or just for fun?
Well, they're actually fun, practical, transportation. We have customers
that we call "Electric Road Warriors" that use them for their daily
commute on major county boulevards 10 miles each way. The new E-3000
can go 30+miles before it needs charging. They are as road-ready
as many of their gasoline cousins. They just shouldn't go on freeways.
Do you need a special license?
We recommend you get a California motorcycle license. California
law is fuzzy about that requirement and reasonable interpretations
could classify them as either motorcycles or mopeds. We don't know
of anyone being stopped for a violation, but believe you should
be conservative. A valid motorcycle license is a useful thing.
How fast? How far?
We hear these questions a lot and the answers are frankly broad.
It's the nature of battery driven machines. Many factors impact
range and speed: Weight, terrain, battery "seas oning," temperature
and more. Even the stated ranges of 20+ and 30+ miles are relative
and don't really describe the useful range. You'd have to ride a
long time at a stretch to run out of juice and most trips on a scooter
don't require that. For the vast majority of likely trips, one of
our electric scooters will do the job just as well as a gas powered
scooter.
Is it hard to learn to ride one?
Not compared to a motorcycle. Common sense dictates novice riders
should be very careful at first and we strongly recommend you take
a motorcycle safety course. But our electric scooters have very
low centers of gravity and are quite stable relative to other two-wheel
vehicles. Most people are surprised at how quickly they learn. That
said, we insist you exercise care.
How much maintenance is required?
Very, very little. Especially compared to gas powered scooters.
The motors are in the rear wheel hubs. That means no chain s, driveshafts
or belts. You don't change motor or gear oil. Really, there's no
maintenance at all except to make sure major battery connections
stay good and tight. Our electric scooters are amazingly inexpensive
and easy to live with!
How long does it take to charge and what
is required?
Our scooters charge for just pennies from any 110v outlet in 4 to
5 hours. And you can "top them off" as you get the chance to plug
them in. With access to an outlet at work, you could ride an E-3000
from San Carlos to San Francisco, plug it in to charge during the
day, and ride it back to San Carlos that night.
What is the life of the batteries?
The same as any car battery. 3-4 years on average. |
